21: significant academic failure
So I refused, which hurt my grades but did not lead to any significant academic failure, because low homework grades averaged with very high test grades produced a passing, albeit average, overall grade.
I must have heard the “You’re not living up to your potential, Adam” speech, from teachers, counselors and parents, at least fifty times during high school. The thing I never understood was how doing well on all the tests while doing a fraction of the studying and work as my peers somehow meant I wasn’t living up to my “potential.” It seemed I was living up to more than they were. I was just doing it in my own way.
